ELKHART, Ind -- ABC 57 reached out to officials, along with residents who live at the complex, to get an update on the fire that happened at the North River Landing apartment complex in Elkhart.
Lots of debris are scattered across the parking lot of the complex due to the amount of water used to put the fire out.
A firefighter at the scene says he thinks over half a million gallons of water were used to put this fire out. Because of the amount of water, no one can enter to get their belongings, even the firefighter who is investigating the scene could not enter because it was not safe. One injury was reported; a firefighter was treated for heat-related illness.
ABC 57 also spoke with a couple who lived in one of the apartments. They say they lost a lot of their belongings, and they thought the fire was put out by 5 AM.
Some residents say that over 10 units were affected by the fire.
The Red Cross gave a statement saying, “We were on site, and we have provided meals for those families that were impacted. Our volunteers are working with them to help them find resources and help them make their recovery.“
ABC 57 also reached out to the apartment complex management, and they said they cannot give any comments at this time.
