Notre Dame files lawsuit against birth control mandate

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- On Monday, Notre Dame and the Fort Wayne - South Bend Diocese filed a lawsuit challenging the Constitutionality of a federal regulation.

It requires religious organizations to pay for insurance coverage that include contraceptives and sterilization procedures.

The university said that violates the teachings of the Catholic Church.

"This filing is about the freedom of a religious organization to live its mission, and its significance goes well beyond any debate about contraceptives," said Notre Dame President Rev. John Jenkins, CSC.

This was one of 12 lawsuits filed on Monday, against the federal government.
