Notre Dame provides update to Friday’s water rescue

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. – A 29-year-old man from South Bend has drowned on Friday after jumping into St. Joseph’s Lake on the University of Notre Dame’s campus. The university has released new information on the incident.

The Notre Dame Police Department received a 911 call around 7:01 pm for reports of a man who had climbed a fence and jumped off a pier at St. Joseph’s Lake. The man got into a closed portion of the beak on the east side of the lake.

Officers responded within two minutes, but could not see the victim in the murky water.

Notre Dame Fire Department arrived at the scene just a few minutes after. The department launched a boat but still could not find the missing man.

Divers from the South Bend Fire Department arrived at the scene and found him at the bottom of the lake.

First responders performed CPR on the man before he was transported to Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Notre Dame does not believe this man has any affiliation with the university. The man’s name has not been released at this time.
