NOW: Notre Dame’s defense under fire after 41– 40 loss to Texas A&M

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame dropped to 0-2 after falling 41-40 to Texas A&M in a high-scoring battle at home. It’s the first time since 1988 that a team has started 0-2 while still ranked in the AP Top 25. Head coach Marcus Freeman says he’s not worried about rankings or the playoff picture—his focus is on preparing for Purdue this Saturday.

The biggest concern came on defense. Under new coordinator Chris Ash, the Irish gave up 488 total yards. Texas A&M averaged 7.1 yards per play, torching Notre Dame for 360 passing yards at more than 21 yards per completion. On the ground, the Aggies added 128 yards and three rushing scores. The Irish defense failed to make much of an impact—finishing with zero sacks and just two tackles for loss.

Freeman admitted explosive plays are still the issue. He said he’s willing to take a bigger role himself if that’s what it takes:

“I’m going to do whatever it takes to make sure that we improve.”

Freeman also pointed out the Irish are just a combined four points away from being 2-0. His message heading into Purdue: Notre Dame has the talent—it’s about finding consistency.
