Notre Dame to join ACC July 1st

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Notre Dame is heading to the Atlantic Coast Conference this summer.

The University announced Tuesday that the Irish will leave the Big East July first, the same day as the so-called "Catholic 7" including St. Johns, Marquette and Georgetown.

Irish Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick says the move is good for Notre Dame and its athletes.

"They needed the certainty of knowing what was happening and the schedule next year," said Swarbrick. "Thanks to the Big East and our colleagues there. We were able in very short order that once the deal with the Catholic 7 was announced to get one done for Notre Dame."

The Irish were originally set to join the ACC next year.
