ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. - Notre Dame women’s softball coach Deanna Gumpf became the all-time winningest coach in all of Notre Dame history with 849 total wins after beating Michigan State on the road 8-0, passing Muffet McGraw for the most wins by any coach in any sport in school history.
Gumpf is in her 22nd season with the Irish.
"It's wonderful because it is a testament to a lot of good teams who have played here and a lot of good players who've played for me," said Gumpf. "And like I told the girls last night when I realized what it was that they're congratulating me for, I said, this is you guys, like, the I'm the lucky one because I get to be part of the ride. But the players play the game. So the ones who win the games, they're the ones who put their heart and soul into everything that they do."
Coach Gumpf even got some special shoutouts from other coaches at Notre Dame, including Muffet McGraw and Micah Shrewsberry.
Coach Gumpf is going for win number 850 right now, currently facing IU at home at Melissa Cook Stadium.
