NOW: Nuclear Plant Experts at public open house for the Palisades

COVERT TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The effort to restart the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant continued this evening with a chance for the public to weigh in and participate at an open house at the Palisades Joint Information Center in Benton Harbor.

'Nuclear Power Experts' were on hand to chat with people about the ongoing attempt to get power operations back up and running, and potential jobs that could become available, pending approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

"Bringing Palisades back online is not only vital to our own local energy meeting our local energy needs, it's vital to us energy security. And it's really showing to the rest of the world that the United States is a global leader in nuclear power to this day," stated Holtec Palisades Government Affairs Senior Manager Nick Culp.

Culp goes on to say, "This is really the first of a wave in the nuclear renaissance. Here in the United States, we're soon to see new reactors come online, and so Palisades coming back is just really a start of a new positive trend for the country."

Just last week a new legal challenge arose, brought by nearly half a dozen environmental groups that formed a coalition.

With public safety risks in mind, the coalition aims to prevent the 50-year-old nuclear reactor from powering back up by the end of this year, which is exactly what Holtec plans to do.
