BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- A Tennessee man is dead following a crash and pursuit with police, ending in an officer-involved shooting.

It started when the truck driver crashed into a home on the 2300 block of Riverbend Drive in St. Joseph Township Monday night.

It still smells like diesel fuel out here after a semi-truck crashed into this house right behind me last night.

There was debris scattered everywhere, including a wheel, a displaced snowplow, the step-up from the truck... and the homeowner's dream car, a corvette, smashed.

This all began around 7 p.m. Monday night when St. Joseph Charter Township Police were called to a welfare check for a semi-truck at the Carronde Park area near Riverbend Drive.

When officers arrived at the scene, the 42-year-old driver from Tennessee crashed into a patrol vehicle before crashing into a house.

The man then got out of the truck and ran. That led to a fight, which ended with an officer shooting the suspect. Paramedics took the man to Corewell Health Spectrum Hospital, where he died.

This afternoon, speaking with the homeowners' daughter, expressed her sorrow for her father and rushed home last night to be with her parents.

"I’m heartbroken for my dad, he built this third bay a few years ago specifically for his Corvette he’s worked 30 and half years retired MSP police officer the second Black officer in Michigan he worked for Meals on Wheels, and this was sort of his retirement," said Coleman Godin.

Michigan State Police tell ABC57 they are investigating the officer-involved shooting.

The officer suffered minor injuries but is expected to be okay and is now on paid administrative leave.
