Officer-involved shooting leaves suspect dead, deputy in critical condition in Kalamazoo County

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. – An officer-involved shooting leaves the suspect dead and a deputy in critical condition on Saturday night, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called out to the Shell gas station on 35th Street in Galesburg, Mich. There, they contacted the suspect who had been involved in a pursuit earlier that evening from a neighboring police agency.

Upon contact, the suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun and pointed it at deputies, according to the report. The suspect entered a vehicle and fled south toward MN Avenue, deputies said.

Deputies pursued the vehicle and the suspect allegedly shot at deputies.

One deputy was struck by the gunfire, causing their patrol car to go off the roadway, the report said.

The remaining deputies continued pursuing the suspect to the area of 44th Street, near Q Avenue. The suspect lost control of their vehicle, drove off the roadway into a field and was unable to drive out.

The suspect left the vehicle and began shooting again at deputies. Deputies returned fire, the suspect died at the scene, the report said.

A passing motorist found the injured deputy, still in their car. They called 911, and the deputy was taken to the hospital, where they remain in critical condition.

Michigan State Police is investigating this incident. Additional information will be released Sunday.
