SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A stretch of U.S. Hwy 20 between Bremen Highway and Elm Road has a history of crashes in sudden winter weather, causing a need for caution during times like the expected snowfall this week.
Indiana State Police say several miles on U.S. 20 - a common commute route for commuters going to and from South Bend and Elkhart - is a prime spot for crashes whenever there’s heavy snow involved.
INDOT Northwest Communications Director Adam Parkhouse said the bypass over Bremen Highway is one crews will especially keep an eye on during forecasted snow.
“We especially focus on those that carry the most traffic, and carry high-speed traffic like the bypass here for instance,” Parkhouse said.
“We know there’s going to be a lot of traffic. We know there’s going to be a lot of traffic moving at a pretty good speed. We need to do our best to keep it clean.”
Parkhouse said even when snow hasn’t gotten heavy on the ground, folks still need to have caution for hazards like black ice - especially on or under bypasses.
