SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- An Ohio man with a violent criminal history is charged with allegedly firing a gun at and hitting a car after a confrontation in South Bend.

34-year-old John Henry Dean III is charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by Serious Violent Felon, Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon, and Criminal Vandalism.

The alleged incident happened July 13. The South Bend Police Department ShotSpotter system detected eight shots fired on McCartney Street. A witness told officers that a white SUV involved in the incident drove off as officers arrived; officers spotted the SUV leaving the area and stopped it.

An initial search of the scene allegedly turned up marijuana and a loaded handgun in the car. Police also allegedly found what appeared to be a fresh bullet hole on the passenger-side door. They allegedly also found bullet damage to an unattended Cadillac SRX.

The driver of the car allegedly, initially told officers she had fired her gun in the air after her daughter's friend had a domestic dispute outside her home. She then changed her story, telling officers that Dean fired the gun; she claimed she lied so Dean wouldn't get in trouble. She allegedly told officers he shot at a black sedan.

Investigators say the driver of the sedan was the other person involved in the dispute with Kelley's daughter.

Court records from Ohio show Dean was convicted of felony assault in February 2020 in that state.
