One dead, three injured in Lincoln Township crash

LINCOLN TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A one-vehicle crash occurred on westbound I-94 at Puetz Road on Sunday around 3:08 a.m., and left one woman dead along with three injured, according to the Lincoln Township Police Department.

Initial police investigation says that the driver of the vehicle may have fallen asleep at the wheel, causing the car to veer from the driving lane and crash through a guardrail, according to responding police.

Officers believe that the car then went airborne and struck a bridge support before coming to a stop.

The vehicle was occupied by four family members from Illinois.

The 53-year-old man behind the wheel received minor injuries and was taken to Lakeland Hospital for treatment, a 13-year-old female in the passenger seat in the back was air-lifted to DeVos Children’s Hospital for serious injuries and a 10-year-old passenger is being treated at Lakeland for serious injuries as well.

The 52-year-old woman in the front seat of the passenger side was pronounced dead at the scene.

Initial investigations say that alcohol was not a factor in the incident and it’s believed that all occupants of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office has taken over the investigation.
