One in custody after SWAT standoff in Elkhart

ELKHART, Ind. - One person was arrested after a standoff with police in the 400 block of W. Marion St. Monday afternoon, according to the Elkhart Police Department.

Harvey Sanders, 53, was preliminarily charged with domestic battery and intimidation. He’s being held in the Elkhart County Jail.

Around 3 p.m., officers were called to the area for a domestic disturbance.

Once there, officers spoke with the victim and Sanders. The victim said Sanders hit her and threatened to shoot her.

At some point, Sanders went into the residence, an apartment, and refused to leave despite officers' negotiations. During the attempts, others exited the apartment and were released.

Officers tried to get Sanders out using less lethal pepperball and impact rounds until around 5:30 p.m., when the SWAT team arrived.

Sanders was negotiated out of the apartment just before 8 p.m. and taken to the hospital for a precautionary evaluation.

No other injuries were reported.
