One dead, one injured in house fire

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. -- One resident was killed and another suffered minor injuries in a house fire Monday evening, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.

First responders were called to the home in the 45000 block of CR 653 at 7:15 p.m.

When deputies arrived, they found a person near the entryway to the residence as smoke billowed from the doorway.

Deputies and troopers with the Michigan State Police assisted the resident out of the house.

Deputies and troopers attempted to get the other person to exit the home, but were unsuccessful.

Paw Paw firefighters arrived and began fighting the fire and attempted to locate the other resident.

The resident was located unresponsive and was rescued from the home.

Attempts to resuscitate the victim were unsuccessful. The victim was identified as a male in his 60s.

The other resident was taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. The resident was then discharged.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
