UPDATE: One person left with serious injuries after high-speed pursuit ends in crash
UPDATE 11:12 a.m. : The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a crash that occurred after a vehicle fleeing at a high rate of speed from an Elkhart Police Department Officer struck another vehicle.
Around 1 a.m., an Elkhart Police Department Officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a suspected drunk driver near Mishawaka Road and Prairie St. The driver fled and a pursuit was started. The officer reported that the vehicle went dark and reached speeds of approximately 100 MPH while heading South on CR 9. Moments later the driver allegedly disregarded a stop sign at the intersection of CR 9 and CR 26 and hit another vehicle traveling East.
The driver of the other vehicle, a 50-year-old female, was injured in the crash and was transported to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment. She has sustained serious injuries but is in stable condition.
The suspected drunk driver was uninjured in the crash. He was transported to the hospital for medical clearance before arrest, and charges are pending.
ORIGINAL STORY: ELKHART, Ind. -- Elkhart County Sheriff's Office reports that one person is in the hospital after a man fleeing from the Elkhart Police Department at speeds around 100 MPH, ended in a collision.
Around 1:06 AM, 19-year-old Jael Paz-Perez, was fleeing police traveling South on CR 9 towards CR 26, colliding into the rear driver's side of another vehicle that was traveling East on CR 26 and had entered the intersection.
The driver of the other vehicle was transported to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment. Their condition is unknown at this time.
Jael Paz-Perez had no injuries; his charges are currently pending.
This crash is being investigated by the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office Crash investigation Team.
