Overnight shooting in South Bend leaves one dead, neighbors and Moms Demand Action speak up
SOUTH BEND, Ind. --- An overnight shooting in South Bend leaves one man, identified as 28-year-old Curtis Shelby, dead. Police officers responded to a shots fired call just before 10:00 P.M. last night at the corner of Marshall Ave. and 33rd St. The South Bend Violent Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation, and it is ongoing.
“I hear about gun violence all the time, just not right in front of my house," says nearby resident, Taylor Jennings.
Jennings recalls walking out of her house on South Bend's east side on Monday night, after hearing some commotion outside. She looked to her left and saw what no one should have to see. A victim of gun violence, now identified as 28-year-old Curtis Shelby, lying on the sidewalk next door.
“I could see someone lying there, no movement," recalls Jennings.
Jennings and other neighbors worry that if the violence continues in the area, someone in their vulnerable neighborhood could become a victim.
“Crime is on the rise and again, and with what happened last night, he doesn’t feel very safe with them in there, and they’re elderly," says an anonymous neighbor about her elderly family living in the neighborhood.
“Kids should be able to play safely without having to worry about someone coming down the street and shooting at someone," Jennings says.
Beyond Michiana, recent mass shootings across the country targeting seemingly innocent people are increasing. Moms Demand Action Indiana is speaking up about the spike, and what needs to be done to curb crime and keep the community safe.
“From Buffalo, to Uvalde, to even further back, we are living in a dystopian and violent culture that the gun lobby has created and that our lawmakers are enabling," says Courtney Daily, Volunteer and State Chapter Trainer for Moms Demand Action Indiana. “The Senate needs to do their job. They need to stop looking away from the carnage that’s happening in the country, and any lawmaker that does choose to side with the gun lobby is opting or carnage over American lives.”
When people are able to see the widespread rise of gun violence happen on their own street, that's when it really hits home.
“Of course crime is on the rise, I feel like everywhere it is with the gun violence," says an anonymous neighbor. "But you know, we’ve never been this close to a shooting before and that’s kind of scary.”
The investigation into this shooting is ongoing, and no arrests have been made yet. If you know anything about what happened or a possible suspect, call Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP.
