Park Jefferson Apartments plans for fire safety improvements

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- This week, Park Jefferson Apartments sent a letter to tenants about planned fire safety improvements.

One man who lives there said he's still on edge!

"I mean, they can tell you anything to keep you reassured, and keep you staying here, but you just have to go with your own thoughts. That's how I feel being here. So, if I see another flame, I'm out of of here!" said Darrell Mays.

The letter says the South Bend complex is up to date on all building codes and zoning ordinances.

Management also promised to supply each apartment with a fire extinguisher, install interconnected smoke alarms, improve fire walls, and provide all residents with fire prevention training.

This month, fire destroyed a building, leaving dozens families homeless. It's one of just many over the years.
