Passenger steals vehicle while driver purchases cigarettes

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- A man is accused of stealing a Jeep from an acquaintance who was giving him a ride, according to court records.

South Bend Police were called to a gas station on N. Lafayette Boulevard on October 15 to investigate a vehicle theft.

The victim told police he was giving Darius Marshall a ride and he stopped at the gas station to get cigarettes.

Marshall stayed in the Jeep while the victim went inside the store, reports said.

After the victim went inside, Marshall drove off in the Jeep, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Officers viewed the video surveillance from the convenience store. It showed the victim exit the Jeep and enter the store, then the Jeep driving away.

Police retrieved the Jeep from Marshall in South Bend, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Marshall has been charged with one count of auto theft.
