Patrol vehicle sideswiped, officer nearly struck in Culver by alleged drunk driver

MARSHALL COUNTY, Ind. -- Culver Police say on May 2nd at approximately 2:30am, Officer Alex Zerbee was conducting a traffic stop on State Road 10 near Thorn Road.

While the officer was standing outside the marked police vehicle with its emergency lights on, another vehicle struck the rear driver's side of the patrol car in a same-direction sideswipe, narrowly missing the officer and continuing without stopping.

Officer Zerbee eventually caught up to the car, finding the driver 62-year-old Angela Shafer to be the only person in the vehicle.

An OWI investigation was conducted, and the Shafer was found to exhibit signs of impairment and agreed to take a certified test.

Shafer was transported to the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth for a certified chemical test, and the results revealed positive of just over three times the legal limit for alcohol.

Shafer was incarcerated in the Marshall County Jail with a $1,500 bond and faces two preliminary Misdemeanor charges:

    Operating a Vehicle while Intoxicated with an Alcohol Concentration Equivalent of .15 or more 

    Operating a Vehicle while Intoxicated --  Endangering a Person

A report will be filed with the Marshall County Prosecutor's Office for review of formal charges and potential additional charges.
