Pedestrian hit by vehicle while checking mail, hospitalized with internal injuries

ELKHART, Ind. -- Deputies responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on US Highway 20 around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, according to the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department.

Responding deputies determined that the driver, a 23-year-old woman from Lagrange, was travelling west on US Highway 20 in a 2015 Nissan Altima when she ran off the road and struck a 37-year-old pedestrian as he was checking his mail.

The driver continued onto the north side of the road after the collision and struck a fence post before coming to a stop, according to deputies.

The pedestrian was taken by EMS to South Bend Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for head and internal injuries.

Officials report that he was in and out of consciousness following the collision, and his condition is unknown.

According to police, the driver of the car had no recollection of the crash and believes that she may have suffered a seizure.

While not taken into custody, the driver was taken to Goshen Hospital for a blood draw and underwent a drug recognition examination.

The sheriff's office says that the collision remains under investigation.
