SOUTH BEND, Ind.—If you’ve taken a stroll down South Michigan Street on a weekend, or even weekday, morning, chances are you’ve seen a crowd of people flocking to PEGGS.

With items on the menu like waffle sandwiches and omelets, PEGGS has become a downtown destination, drawing in crowds who are just here for a football weekend and families who have always called South Bend home.

As wait lines grew over the last few years, restaurant owner Peg Dalton and her business partner Kelli Coppola decided to grow their already busy business by expanding the breakfast spot.

“We’re really fortunate to have people waiting to come here for breakfast,” Dalton said. "We wanted to expand our waiting area to make them more comfortable."

The business acquired about 1,150 extra square feet and since August, renovations have been slowly transforming the space into what is now the new PEGGS.

“We took a bit of a pause because we knew we couldn’t close down during football season,” Dalton said. “But we did close for the last three days and everyone really came together and got it all done.”

The new PEGGS, which reopened on Thursday, offers a “Keli Case,” featuring take-away items like roasted Brussel sprouts, chicken cutlets and salmon filets for those who want to grab food on the go. Hours for the "Keli Case" and the bar have been extended to 6 p.m.

A brand-new juice bar is settled in near the added waiting area, offering a plethora of ingredients from kale to ginger to lemons juiced fresh right in front of you.

The new bar also gives the restaurant a more efficient way to serve mimosas and Bloody Marys, Dalton said.

This isn’t the first time Dalton’s hometown restaurant has changed. PEGGS was re-branded in 2017 from its original iteration, but kept the same warm and welcoming atmosphere.

“We are here and we’re staying here. We’re very committed to South Bend and we are happy to be a part of the growth and vibrancy that’s happening in downtown South Bend,” Dalton said.

The makeover comes just in time for Eat Drink South Bend’s Winter Restaurant Weeks, in which PEGGS is participating in.

PEGGS is located at 127 S. Michigan Street and is open Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
