If you look at the sky tonight, you'll have a chance to see the pink supermoon. Sounds impressive, but what does that mean exactly?
Each year, we have twelve or thirteen full moons. Tonight is one of those full moon nights.
What makes a supermoon special is that a full moon is occurring while the moon is also at the closest location to Earth on its orbit. This may make the moon seem closer to us, or it may look larger or more full in the night sky.
Now, about that "pink" part. Pink is my favorite color, and if you were hoping to see a rosy-tinted moon tonight, you'll be disappointed like me.
Each full moon has a nickname based on its moth. According to the Farmers' Almanac, the April full moon is nicknamed the pink moon because we see a lot more pink flowers blooming this month. There's nothing pink expected for the sky, however. We'll still see the normal gold to white hues of the moon tonight.
If you'd like to get a glimpse of the full moon, the official full moon occurs around 11:30 p.m. (EDT), but you'll be able to see it through the night.
Skies look to stay mostly clear overnight, with a few more clouds building in past midnight, so look up late tonight for the best skygazing opportunity.
