SOUTH BEND, Ind. - South Bend police say a 9-year-old boy was shot Monday while sleeping on his couch.
Investigators say someone fired multiple shots around 1 a.m. at a home on the 1900 block of North Brookfield.
The home sits next to a daycare and across from Marquette Elementary School, where children frequently use the playground.
Vivian Flowers Owns The Flowers Learning Center Daycare just two doors down from the crime scene.
"I have to keep them safe and do the best I can, and with someone shooting that close to the daycare, it’s nerve-wracking," Flowers said.
One of the shots hit the child in the ankle. The child was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Mishawaka.
Officers said multiple rounds hit the home as the suspect drove South.
Neighbor Marvell Quinn was shocked to hear the news.
"It’s usually a safe area here. It isn’t that bad. But to hear about it now, yeah, it raises your awareness a little more," Quinn said.
Quinn and Flowers say they're looking out for all kids in the neighborhood, and hope nothing like this happens again.
No suspects have been arrested.
Anyone with information about this crime or any criminal activity should contact CRIMESTOPPERS at 288-STOP or the South Bend Police Department.
