Police arrest two teens suspected in multiple armed robberies
Michigan City and Long Beach Police arrested two teens who are suspected of committing multiple armed robberies over the last few weeks, according to a press release from Michigan City Police.
Around 8:49 p.m., an attempted armed robbery happened at the Wilson Leather store at the Lighthouse Place outlets.
Two black males entered and attempted to rob the store at gunpoint.
Moments later, the two men approached and robbed a family that had just left a store, police said.
Right after the robbery, Michigan City and Long Beach Police saturated the area searching for men matching the descriptions of the suspects.
Two people matching the descriptions of the suspects were located in the 500 block of Washington Street.
When police ordered the two to comply with officers' commands, one complied and the other ran away.
Officers who witnessed the second suspect flee, chased him and arrested him, according to police.
A handgun was recovered at the scene, police said.
Police said evidence was recovered that implicates the two teens in a string of armed robberies on the city's east and south sides over the past few weeks.
One of the suspects if 15, the other is 16.
The two suspects are believed to be responsible for the robbery and attempted robbery at the outlet center as well as five additional armed robberies, police said.
The 16-year-old is being held at the La Porte County jail on one count of robbery with a deadly weapon, attempted armed robbery, and resisting law enforcement.
The 15-year old was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center and on one count of robbery with a deadly weapon, attempted armed robbery, and resisting law enforcement.
The investigation is continuing and additional charges will be forthcoming over the next few days, police said.
