Police ask Mishawaka drivers to 'Cool Your Engines' this school year

Tuesday, thousands of area students said goodbye to summer vacation! It was the first day of classes for several districts, including Mishawaka and Elkhart.

Tuesday morning also kicked off the "Cool Your Engines" safety campaign. Most Mishawaka students walk to school, since the district doesn't have buses.

Police want to make sure drivers pay attention and slow down!

Lt. Tim Williams of the Mishawaka Police Department said, "If you could walk with your children, walk with your children. It's best to always have a parent with the child. Don't send them out by themselves. Send them with a partner."

Police will have extra patrols in school zones to watch for drivers. South Bend students head back to school next Thursday, August 25.
