ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- A 42-year-old man wanted on several warrants out of Elkhart County was arrested on Aug. 16, following an early morning police pursuit which ended in Michigan with a crash.

The suspect, Steven Bird, is charged with Resisting Law Enforcement using a vehicle, a Level 6 Felony.

He was found to have four warrants, with one stemming from 2017 for the charges of Manufacturing Methamphetamine, Possession of Methamphetamine, and Possession of Paraphernalia. Another warrant from May involves the charge of Escape.

Bird had his initial hearing for the police pursuit on Tuesday, and no future court dates have been announced.

According to the probable cause affidavit, at around 1:40 a.m., on Aug. 16, an Elkhart County sheriff's deputy traveling north on C.R. 11 toward Stateline Road observed a red 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix also traveling north in front of him.

The deputy noted the Grand Prix had a loud exhaust.

The driver, later identified as Bird, then turned left onto Stateline Road at which point authorities say he drove left of center. The deputy then activated his lights and siren to conduct a traffic stop.

Documents state Bird continued driving before turning onto 5 Points Road at a high speed. The pursuit continued onto US 12 where Bird allegedly reached speeds of over 105 mph.

During the pursuit, Bird drove through at least two yards, according to law enforcement. Bird eventually crashed into a tree at the T intersection of Birch Road and Lakeshore Drive.

Bird's passenger, a 28-year-old woman, exited the vehicle and was subsequently placed in the back of a patrol vehicle.

Backup, including members of the Cass County Sheriff's Office, arrived on scene and deputies held Bird at gunpoint while giving him commands to place both hands outside the car.

Deputies say Bird began making statements that he was going to kill himself if they approached the car.

Deputies eventually approached and handcuffed him as the driver's side door was pried open.

While Bird was being taken from the car, he informed law enforcement he fled because he had an active arrest warrant and his driver's license was suspended. BMV records confirmed his license was suspended.

Bird was taken to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment.
