Police investigating after four-year-old shot at south bend apartment complex

SOUTH BEND, Ind. --  South Bend Police say early Sunday morning just before 1:30am, officers responded to the Miami Hills apartment complex in South Bend on the report of a shooting.
As officers they arrived, they were told a four-year-old was taken to the hospital for what police say are calling an ‘apparent gunshot wound’.

Police said the child had non-life-threatening injuries. ABC57 spoke to the child’s mother today at the complex, who did not want to go on camera.

She says other a little bit of pain she said, ‘she's the same little girl as before’

Police say a preliminary investigation shows the child was hit by the ‘apparent gunfire’ from outside the apartment while she was inside.

The child’s mother says she was in bed and her daughter was spending time with family and other neighbors' children, when a car came through the parking lot driving quickly and started shooting.

“Then, after that, my sister came running to the living room and said, screaming and crying, ‘check the kids.’ So that's what we did. At first, I didn't see anything. I'm looking and then that's when I just saw the blood. And as any parent, I just panicked,” said the child’s mom.

She tells ABC57 she has no idea why this happened or who it was.

South Bend Police say no other injuries have been reported so far and its violent crimes unit is investigating this case.

According to SBPD, several other apartments were damaged by 'apparent gunfire'.

SPBD shared some data on what police call ‘criminally assaulted’ shootings. This does not include accidents involving firearms, self-defense, or suicide.

So far this year, nine juveniles, age seventeen and under, have been shot so far this year. That’s compared to eight juveniles this time last year.

This year, four of the nine juveniles who were shot were children age 12 or under. Last year at this time, zero children 12 or younger had been shot.
