Police officer suing department, alleges discrimination, retaliation

A South Bend Police officer who has been on the force for 30 years is suing the department alleging discrimination and retaliation.

Sergeant Nathan Cannon has been with the South Bend Police Department for 30 years and has been a sergeant for 20 years.

According to the allegations in the lawsuit, other less-qualified officers were promoted to lieutenant during that span.

Cannon alleges Former Police Chief  Ron Teachman promoted 4 non-minority officers to lieutenant rank even though Sergeant Cannon says he was more qualified.

Cannon is suing for race discrimination and retaliation.

The suit says Cannon filed a complaint with the South Bend Human Rights Commission in June 2014 and an amended complaint a month later.
