Police warn residents about scam involving men claiming to be with Public Works

New Buffalo City Police are investigating a scam where a man claiming to be a Public Works employee asks for access to the back of the resident's home.

Police say two, and possibly three, individuals are breaking into the homes while the residents are inside.

Police say one of the men is typically wearing a traffic vest and will approach the homeowner stating that he works for Public Works or an unknown utility company and needs access to the back of the residence.

Once the homeowner is occupied speaking with the first person, that’s when police say one or two other subjects will enter the residence and steal jewelry, cash and other small objects of value.

The subject is described as a darker complexion white male, possibly Hispanic, wearing blue jeans and a yellow traffic vest.

Police ask that if you are approached by anyone you ask to see some sort of identification or proof that they work for a utility company and call police immediately.

Officers are reminding the public to please stay alert to suspicious activity in your neighborhood and report all suspicious behavior to the police.
