Portage Township Trustee files formal complaint with AG Rokita regarding Karl King Tower

ABC 57

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Portage Township Trustee Jason Critchlow announced Thursday morning that a formal complaint has been filed with Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita regarding the living conditions at Karl King Tower at 515 E. Monroe St.

Critchlow describes the issue as "dangerous and unacceptable living conditions."

The complaint includes the following reported issues:

  • Severe sanitation issues, i.e. bed bugs and rodent infestations with animal waste
  • Chronic elevator outages
  • Intimidation and threats from property management toward residents and service providers
  • Fire and building code violations, including missing alarms and unsecured exits
  • Recurring loss of heat, hot water, and electricity

Critchlow also brought up the most recent issue of two weeks without heat during freezing temperatures.

“We cannot accept a situation where seniors and vulnerable residents are forced to live in such conditions. This is not just a housing issue; its a human rights issue. I have called for the support of the Indiana Attorney General's office because no one in South Bend should have to live like this," Critchlow said.

AG Rokita has been asked to intervene and investigate the reported problems as well as enforce compliance with state and federal housing standards.
