Preparation begins for demolition of 1000 block of South Main in Elkhart

ELKHART, Ind. – Elkhart officials say as of January 8, contractors were on site putting up fencing in preparation for the demolition of the 1000 block of South Main Street.

Officials say demolition will start on the north end of the block and work south.

The wall that contains the mural by Kelby Love is planned to be the last piece of the block to be demolished.

Elkhart officials say contractors will preserve the Kelby Love mural bricks that are in-tact and stack them in a pile.

The public will be invited to grab a brick once demolition is done, according to officials.

Although officials can't give an exact date when bricks will be available, they'll keep the public updated as the demolition moves forward.

Elkhart officials say the wall with the Love mural won't come down for several weeks.
