Prepare for the bitter cold temperatures

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A winter storm is barreling across the country bringing snow and travel headaches to other areas. In Michiana, the passage of the cold front will mean bitterly cold temperatures.

The last time the mercury fell to nine degrees was January 21, 2012. So it has been quite a while since we saw such frigid lows.

Here are a few tips to keep you prepared.

Use curtains to your advantage. Open them during the day for sunlight and close them at night to keep the heat inside.

Double check all windows, fireplace dampers, attic and crawl space doors are closed tightly.

Check on your neighbors to make sure they are okay.

Don't forget about your pets. They need shelter and a warm dry spot for food and water.

And reach out for help if you need it to organizations like 2-1-1.
