Public Health Advisory issued for St. Joseph County due to high temps

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. - The St. Joseph County Department of Health has issued a Public Health Advisory because of high temperatures hitting the area this week.

Residents should keep the following tips in mind as they face the heat:

  • Wear lightweight clothing
  • Stay indoors, if possible
  • Schedule outdoor activities with the temperatures in mind
  • Pace yourself
  • Wear sunscreen
  • Don't leave kids or pets in vehicles
  • Avoid hot and heavy meals
  • Drink plenty of water – stay away from sugary or alcoholic drinks
  • Keep pets hydrated (and check the temps of asphalt before taking them on walks)
  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses
  • Check on those who are high-risk for heat-related illnesses

The City of South Bend has a number of community centers open as cooling stations, including:

  • Charles Black Community Center
    • Monday – Thursday: 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.
    • Friday: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
    • Closed Saturday and Sunday
  • Howard Park Event Center
    • Monday – Friday: 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
    • Saturday: 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.
    • Sunday: 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.
  • O’Brien Fitness Center
    • Monday – Friday: 5 a.m. - 9 p.m.
    • Saturday: 7 a.m. - 4 p.m.
    • Sunday: 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • Pinhook Community Center
    • Times vary, by appointment
