Purdue Extension Team offering an urban farming program
Purdue University SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Purdue Extension will host an Urban Farming Signature Program this spring, offering an in-depth educational series designed to help participants grow food safely and sustainably in urban environments.
The eight-session program will meet on Wednesdays from March 11 through April 29, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, at the Centre Township Branch, located at 1150 Kern Rd., South Bend, Indiana. The Urban Farming Signature Program is intended for community gardeners, small-scale and beginning farmers, educators, and others interested in urban food production. Light refreshments will be provided during each session.
Led by Purdue Extension specialists and educators, the program provides research-based instruction covering the entire production process—from planting to harvest—while addressing the unique challenges and opportunities of urban agriculture. Participants will learn how to identify urban farming challenges and opportunities, form goals specific to their operation, understand and manage urban soil health, and create a comprehensive site design. Additional topics include developing a crop plan, managing pests, and implementing food safety practices throughout the growing season.
