Questions about protection raised after officer starts GoFundMe for bulletproof vest

By KMOV staff

St. Louis, MO - A St. Louis police officer started a GoFundMe page to raise money for a new bulletproof vest, one that is designed to stop rifle rounds.

A vest that can stop a rifle round could weigh around 20 pounds and would cost around $1,000.

St. Louis City Police Union Leader Jeff Roorda said officers buying their own vests is not the solution to the problem. He said the department could be buying officers vests that stop rifle rounds very soon.

The St. Louis Police Department is currently testing various options on the streets. The key is to find something safe and comfortable.

The St. Louis County Police Department says their officers already have vests that stop a majority of rifle rounds.

News 4 reached out to the St. Louis Police Department for comment, but one was not available in time for this report.
