Reaction to deadly double shooting in Elkhart

NOW: Reaction to deadly double shooting in Elkhart

Elkhart, Ind - Elkhart Police responded to a deadly double shooting in the parking lot outside the Galley Sports Pub on Northview Drive just before 12:30 a.m., Thursday morning.

When police got there, they found two men shot.

30-year-old Michael Pike was pronounced dead outside the bar, while 24-year-old Jalen Young succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Police then arrested 22-year-old Christain Wall on the scene on preliminary charges of murder.

Michael Downing, who works at Church Community Services, a non-profit that helps improve the lives of Elkhart residents, wants young people to avoid the lure of guns and violence.

"Unfortunately, it's in our music, we see a lot of displays of violence, the violence on tv in social media and it's heightened like it's the thing to do and it's not,” said Downing.

Miranda Lambrou, the owner of Big City Pizza, couldn't believe the deadly shooting happened right outside her business.

"You know it was a shock, like when I heard it, it was pretty shocking because we never really experienced anything like that really close over here,” said Lambrou.

Lambrou considers this shooting an isolated incident. As an Elkhart resident for over 40 years, she has no real concerns about her own safety in the shopping center she shares with the Galley Sports Pub.

“I feel pretty safe around here, I'm from Chicago. I pretty much been here all my life and I never had any issues or been afraid in this area,” said Lambrou.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is currently investigating.
