Reminder: Businesses must maintain clear walkways and parking spots for disabled persons

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The City of South Bend sent out a press release on Tuesday reminding businesses and the commercial community that they must keep walkways and parking spaces for disabled persons clear.

The City wants every building/area to remain accessible during snowy conditions.

A city ordinance requires that property owners must clear a sidewalk of snow and ice within 24 hours of snowfall or ice accumulation.

Fines are issued when the snow exceeds 3 inches.

Snow must be disposed in a way that won’t affect disabled persons.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) specifically requires that any place of public accommodation be accessible to disabled persons.
