Rep. Walberg on Iran strikes

ABC57. -- Rep. Tim Walberg of Michigan's Fifth District spoke with ABC57 Monday regarding the U.S. strikes on Iran Saturday and the Monday counterattack.

"We are safer today than we were on Saturday afternoon," he said.

Walberg said he fully supports the President's strike in the country, saying Iran simply cannot have a nuclear weapon.

"You never think of the government doing anything perfect, but the military in this case, what they did was the closest thing to perfection," he said.

He said part of that "perfection" is because there was no civilian loss of life and no American injury.

There is still broad speculation about the effectiveness of the strike and whether Iran is capable of creating a nuclear bomb.

ABC57's Annie Kate also asked Walberg about the opposition from the left; some, like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Cortez, are saying this is grounds for impeachment. But he disagrees and says Trump's actions did not violate the War Powers Act.

Also, he says that had the president notified anyone in Congress besides key players, Iran would have known about the planned strike.

Walberg said he does not believe the president has plans to facilitate a regime change in Iran.

Some critics are also saying this war is not America's fight but Israel's fight; however, Walberg says Iran has been a risk to America for quite some time.

He said America is the only country capable of taking out Iran's nuclear ambitions.

"As far as I'm concerned, this isn't war," he said. "The B2s were sent in for one specific purpose, and that was to take out what could end up resulting in a war."
