Report: Palisades plant needs more inspections

COVERT TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A new report says the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant needs more inspections and regulations to keep nearby residents safe.

It also claims it is the reason why Van Buren County has the highest cancer rates in the state of Michigan.

The environmental group behind the study says they are tired of all the so-called band-aid repairs at the plant.

"These are not private matters," said Joseph Mangano. "The public has a right to know how much pollution it adds to their environment and what it may be doing to their health."

The NRC says they have regular meetings to inform the public and they're more than happy to answer anybody's questions.

They say it is too early to know the exact connection between nuclear energy and high cancer rates.
