Rescue underway for ship trapped in ice

The ship carrying passengers on a scientific exploration has been trapped in the arctic ice since Christmas.

So far other rescue ships have been unable to reach it so now a helicopter team is hoping to evacuate dozens of passengers and crew.

All those on board are in good health and have enough food and supplies to last several weeks.

"I must say it sounds a lot worse than it is so please don't be alarmed everyone is well and we're looking forward to getting home soon," said expedition leader Chris Turney.

The scientific team on board the Russian ship was recreating an exploration to Antarctica from 100 years ago. That crew also got trapped in the arctic ice.
