Today, students at South Bend’s Rise Up Academy celebrated a rebirth of sorts.
Teachers at the school built a nest and set a fire that was to symbolize the rebirth of the phoenix, their mascot. The school was recently moved off of a state watch list because it showed improvement.
“For our kids they come into our school trying to get a second chance they want an opportunity to graduate and so be dispelling some of their habits and throwing them into the fire they're going to start over,” said Principal George Azar.
Students began classes at the school yesterday. All other South Bend Community Schools begin on August 25.
