Robbers tie up couple, pistol-whip woman, shoot and kill family dog

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Police are searching for three men wanted for their role in a violent home invasion on Thursday morning.

Police said it happened at Hickory and State Road 23.

A couple was at home when three black men in utility vests came knocking on their door. They said they were with the utility company and needed to come inside.

Once they got in the door, their story changed quickly. The men demanded money, shot and killed the couple's dog, pistol-whipped the woman, and tied up the couple.

Police said they took several items from the home, cut the phone lines, and ran out the door.

That's when the couple had the opportunity to free themselves and go to a neighbor's house for help. The neighbors called 9-1-1 around 11:15 a.m.

The woman was taken to the hospital for medical treatment. The man was treated for a head injury on the scene and was released. He was later taken to the police station for questioning.

Their neighbor told police they thought they saw the three men get into a white SUV and drive away.

The robbers are still on the loose. If you have any information that could lead police to finding the suspects, contact St. Joseph County Police or CrimeStoppers with any available tips. Call the Detective Bureau at 235-9569 or CrimeStoppers at 288-STOP.
