Roofsit 2020 begins Monday to raise funds and awareness of child abuse in Michiana
GRANGER, Ind.-- Monday morning begins Roofsit 2020, a week long fundraiser hosted by U93 radio station in conjunction with Martins Supermarket and Prevent Child Abuse St. Joseph County.
Roofsit began in 1996, when two DJ’s at U93 radio station wanted to help victims of abuse.
Spending a week on local business rooftops, day and night, they stayed on the air to share the stories of child abuse victims across Michiana.
Things may look a little different this year because of the Coronavirus pandemic.
Every day this week will host a different fundraising event, like 3 virtual trivia nights, a dine-out, and donut drive through.
Funds raised will help in the prevention of child abuse and to educate the public on how to stop the cycle in Berrien, Cass, Porter, St. Joseph and Elkhart counties.
Organizers say the weeks events are just a reminder that its not just teachers and administrators who are required to report child abuse, it’s up to the entire community to do their part.
“You might now think of maybe someone at martins being the first person maybe outside the family to see a child. We’re going to start looking at across the community, in all types of fields. Life guards at pools. Places like that that normally you wouldn’t think to be in tune with child safety issues and doing some training and some outreach so all of us can spot things that may not be quite right," said Christina McGovern with Prevent Child Abuse St. Joseph County.
There are multiple ways you can donate to the cause.
Certain items your purchase at any Michiana Martins Supermarket, as well as t-shirts you can purchase inside.
You can also call (574)-234-KIDS.
This year marks 24 years for the initiative.
