MIDDLEBURY, Ind. -- A new Safe Haven Baby Box was installed Monday at the Middlebury Fire Department.
It’s the 146th baby box in the Hoosier state, and the 355th installed across the country.
The boxes are available 24/7 for mothers to surrender their children anonymously without fear of prosecution.
Firefighters were trained by the Safe Haven group to also handle in-person surrenders and what to do should a baby be placed in the box.
A trio of alarms are also in place to notify firefighters should a baby be surrendered.
Firefighters say they’ve been working on getting a box in place at their station for close to a decade now.
The Safe Haven Crisis line is available here.
