School installs bulletproof white boards

COLD SPRINGS, Minn. -- Some manufactures are trying to make schools safer by switching classroom supplies.

A Minnesota school district is swapping out old chalkboards for new bulletproof white boards.

Police say this provides an extra layer of protection in case a gunman comes inside.

"It is empowerment. It's a tool. It's something that the teachers finally will have and the cooks, and the custodial staff and the principals and the administrative staff, so that they don't feel helpless," said Chief Phil Jones.

The high school in that district has seen tragedy before. In 2003, two students were shot and killed.

Officials say they would like to see these white boards in all of its schools.
