School threats deemed "insignificant" by Niles Police Department

NOW: School threats deemed “insignificant“ by Niles Police Department

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- For two consecutive school days, Ballard Elementary School was on lock down due to a potential threat.

There were two other schools named in today's lockdown, both Niles High School and Eastside Connections.

Niles police have determined that the latest concern came from an email.

It contained threats of violence to several school buildings and members of the police department.

Police did a full security sweep and found the email came from Nigeria.

After investigating,  police say the likelihood the threat would be carried out is "insignificant."

As a precaution the school remained in lockdown and the students were dismissed at their usual time with extra patrols watching the schools.

As for last week, Niles Police Department did inform us Friday's incident at this school is under criminal investigation and these incidents are taken very seriously.
