UPDATE: Brake failure on semi causes closure of section of US 20 Wednesday morning

12:30 P.M. UPDATE: Authorities say 45-year-old Ivis Hernandez Romero, of Chicago, was driving a 2001 Volvo Semi east on US20 -- from the area of S.R. 19, when traffic slowed for construction.
Romero told authorities he applied the brakes to slow down but the brakes did not work and he collided with a 2012 Nissan Xterra being driven by a 23-year-old Elkhart woman.
The collision forced the Xterra into the back of a 2015 Jeep Wrangler being driven by a 66-year-old South Bend man.
"[The driver of the Jeep] said that he was stopped for traffic on US20 facing east when he heard the sounds of crashing behind him, and does not remember anything after the impact," the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office said.
The semi then went off the south side of the road then back onto the road and collided with another Volvo Semi being driven by a 54-year-old Benton Harbor man.
The driver of the second semi told the ECSO he was stopped in traffic on US20, facing east, when Romero came around on the shoulder and struck his vehicle.
While both drivers of the semis were uninjured, the driver of the Xterra had lacerations and head pain, and the driver of the Jeep reported neck and head pain.
