ABC57's Brian Conybeare interviews Democratic Secretary of State Candidate Beau Bayh

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- There's a familiar name from Indiana politics in this year's race for Secretary of State.

"I'm very lucky I come from a family of public servants," Beau Bayh told ABC57 anchor Brian Conybeare today during an interview about his candidacy and the issues he thinks are important.

Bayh is the son of former Democratic Governor, and U.S. Senator Evan Bayh, and the grandson of former U.S. Senator, and presidential candidate Birch Bayh. The 30-year-old U.S. Marine Corps veteran, and Harvard-educated lawyer also told us that some of his goals are to get more Hoosier voters to the polls, and to keep current election integrity measures in place.

"I'm in favor of voter ID. I think our state's voter ID law has generally made our elections secure. We have a problem in Indiana with access. We rank toward the bottom, if not last, in a lot of years in voter participation," said Bayh.

The non-partisan 'U.S. Elections Project' reports 58.6 percent of eligible voters turned out for the 2024 presidential election - below the national average of 63.9 percent, and well below Michigan's voter turnout of 74.6 percent.

Tune in Thursday for Brian's interview with new Republican Secretary of State candidate, Max Engling.
