Elkhart County man arrested, charged with Conspiracy to Commit Murder

Elkhart County Jail: Reece Barrett

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- A 34-year-old man is in jail after allegedly recruiting someone to kill another individual, he'd been having problems with.

The suspect, Reece Barrett, has been charged with Conspiracy to Commit Murder, a Level 2 Felony.

According to the probable cause affidavit in the case, the Elkhart County Homicide Unit was contacted by a witness on Aug. 10, who alleged Barrett came to them to recruit them into killing another person.

The witness stated Barrett told them to get an assault rifle and kill the other person with a shot to the head.

Barrett allegedly told the witness he was having problems with the intended target.

The witness also showed authorities text messages from Barrett about moving forward with the plan following their previous meeting.

The PCA states on Aug. 11, the witness and Barrett met up to further discuss the plan to kill the intended target.

Authorities say the witness was equipped with audio and video recording devices during the meeting.

Investigators say during this meeting, Barrett gave the witness specific instructions on how to commit the murder by luring the intended victim out of the residence since Barrett knows the home's doors are normally locked.

Authorities noted these instructions were necessary to carry out the crime since the witness was not familiar with the intended target's behaviors.

Documents state Barrett could be heard making the sound of a firearm discharging after telling the witness what to do once the intended victim is outside.

Investigators say Barrett is then heard telling the witness if they don't handle this matter, he would do it himself.

On Aug. 12, detectives from the Elkhart County Homicide Unit and a deputy with the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office found Barrett driving in the area of C.R. 6 and C.R. 17 and made traffic stop, during which he was arrested.
