Crash with horse and buggy leaves three children injured

ABC 57

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- Three children were left injured Monday evening after a vehicle struck the horse and buggy they were in.

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office reports a Ford Taurus, driven by a 56-year-old Syracuse man, was traveling south on S.R. 13.

A horse and buggy, operated by a 41-year-old Goshen man, was also traveling south on S.R. 13 ahead of the Taurus, but at a slower speed.

Authorities say the Taurus' driver became distracted while looking at his notebook and was unable to stop before he struck the horse and buggy.

The buggy suffered what authorities described as "catastrophic back-end damage."

The man operating the buggy suffered a laceration to the head, while his passengers, an 11-year-old boy, 2-year-old boy, and an 11-year-old girl suffered a head laceration, knee laceration, and small skull fracture respectively. The 11-year-old girl was then taken to Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

The Taurus' driver was uninjured and underwent a blood draw, with results pending.

The horse suffered minor non-life-threatening lacerations to its body.

No citations were issued in this incident.
